How to: Build a Tankadin (1 reply)

Alright I've been looking over other protection paladins specs and gear within this guild. From what I've seen make me feel most are close but still a bit off with their gear and their talents are close as well.

Most people know for tanking you need Health, Defense skill and Spell damage. These are the three main areas to increase to help maximize your tanking. After spell damage you are looking to increase your specific defense skills (mostly looking at blocking), Intellect, then Mana per 5 seconds and Strength are tied. But when When socketing don't just lock in on just stamina. I advise for blue sockets just going with the Solid Star of Elune (+12 Stamina). For the Yellow Sockets I would recommend the Enduring Talasite (+4 Defense and +6 Stamina). While for The Red sockets I suggest the Glowing Nightseye (+5 Spell damage and +6 Stamina). and for enchants I tend to lean more towards Stamina or Defense skills.

Now on to Talents. I have come the find that there are about 46 'Must have' talent points in The protection tree. They are as followed.

Redoubt (5/5), Toughness (5/5), Anticipation (5/5), Shield Specialization (3/3), Improved Righteous Fury (3/3), Blessing of Kings (1/1), Blessing of Sanctuary (1/1), Spell Warding (2/2), Sacred Duty (2/2), One-Handed Weapon Specialization (5/5), Ardent Defender (5/5), Holy Shield (1/1), Improved Holy shield (2/2), Combat Expertise (5/5), Avenger Shield (1/1).

After these 46 point it comes down to which way you want to hold aggression. First is the way is with Seal of command. This is an effective way BUT seal of Command is a proc attack meaning there are times when just your normal damage is doing the hate holding (This can cause problems). If you go that route you'll also will need to add Attack power into your Stats that you'll want to increase. With this path I would recommend Benediction (5/5) with Improved judgement (2/2) and Improved Seal of the Crusader (3/3). And then Seal of Command (1/1) This leaves 4 points left over I would recommend either Reckoning (4/5) or Conviction (4/5). There is Deflection (4/5) which can be helpful as a help for a lack of defense skill.

Then there is the path I took With Improved Seal of Righteousness. For This I recommend Divine Intellect (5/5) and then Improved Seal of Righteousness (5/5). Now you'll have 5 points left over really you can put these 5 point where ever you want. I though would recommend Precision (3/3) Benediction (5/5) again is a nice talent. There is Stoicism (2/2) and Unyielding Faith (2/2) both are helpful.

You keep hearing that the Bread and butter of a Tankadin is Them being hit. That is a misconception. True that paladins build hate from using Blessing of Sanctuary, holy shield and Retribution aura. But that isn't the how story for a Paladin tank more so about 50% of it. First thing you need to understand there is two types of tanking. Aoe/Speed tanking This is where the The pally needs to be hit theory comes from. Speed tanking allows a paladin to rush a group through an instance. But the other theory of paladin tanking is bash Tanking. This is primarily done for tougher fights. mostly meaning bosses or upper heroic instances. This requires the use of Devotion Aura, True at this point most tanks that will only add about .5% damage reduction but still at that point you are being hit for 4K+ so reducing a hit by 25 damage does help the healer. With this tanking style group needs to have the paladin as the Main assist. And you'll just use Consecration and Judgement of Righteousness and judge Crusader to improve you holy damage you are dealing. To give yourself a boost in the Threat use Avenging Wrath After you have Judgement of the Crusader applied to the monster.

I hope this will allow other Protection paladins to become better tanks.
