Shadow Priest SP vs crit etc... (3 replies)

I found this on the www.shadowpriest.com forums. It helped me a bit.

According to [code.google.com] ... tReport_70
and using the no_swd scalars(since swd barely makes a difference in dps) here's how stats will likely be valued once the promised changes go live:
Spellpower = 1 PP
Crit = 0.78 PP
Haste = 0.7 PP
Spirit = 0.23 PP
Int = 0.38 PP
Hit = 1.59 PP(when not hit-capped)

So crit will be a bit more valuable while haste will see a decrease in worth.

I'll be adding WotLK items in the coming weeks leading up to the release of the expansion. The links will be in red, which signifies they are currently unavailable. Since the items are for level 80 characters, scalars from [code.google.com] ... tReport_80 will be used. Here's a look at the values for stats at 80(this info will obviously be added to the OP also):
Spellpower = 1 PP
Crit = 0.6 PP
Haste = 0.72 PP
Spirit = 0.22 PP
Int = 0.19 PP
Hit = 1.16 PP(when not hit-capped)

The Talent Shuffle (2 replies)

Priests are so quiet...

Anyway the new talents are upon us, and it's time for another talent shuffle. I thought it might be good to list what talents you may be taking and are excited (or not so excited) about. As a holy priest, not a whole lot has changed. However, I think it is important note the following:

1. Downranking is gone (so +heal is kind of nerfed now)
2. 1 pot per fight
3. the regen model has changed
4. Prayer of Mending will now add heal aggro to the healer

Some Talents that I will be taking:

New love for holy specialization - (adds 5% crit to holy) - considering nearly all bottom tier talents are based around crit and overhealing, this is now almost a must.

Inspiration - (that thing that gives armor buff when your heal crits) - now we crit more!

Holy Concentration (and Imp) - I can't say I love this change. You have 30% (45% if improved) to go into HC now when you crit, whereas previously it was a flat 6%. This means in order to achieve the previous chance %, you would need at least 20% holy crit (20 * .30 = 6) or 14% if you take imp HC (14 * .45 = 6). But a free spell is a free spell, and I'll still take this version.

Spirit of Redemption - the signal flare to the raid that Lucella has died.

Lightwell - no I am still not taking this. Until I encounter something that makes me go "man I *really* wish I had lightwell now", we have HoTs and AoE heals.

Empowered Healing - an oldie but a goodie. Basic flat out buff to heals.

Serendipity (*new!) - Yey I get to overheal mo. And not be called a nub anymore.

For Disc - I'm taking Inner focus and meditation. Stopping there at 14 pts.

At 80, I may make some more changes but for now, starting out with 61 pts, this is what I will most likely do.

Feel free to add yours,

Power Leveling a Priest (10 replies)

I can't claim to be an expert on priests. However, I think I've probably got the most priest-y experience in the guild, so I'll impart what I've learned in my 55 levels.

For instances and group play, there is alot to be said for Discipline and Holy specs. However, for solo fun, grinding, and actually causing some damage in your priest gear, go Shadow.

What I find exciting about Shadow-speccing a Priest is that the abilities in the Shadow Tree build on each other quite well. The big prize is Shadow form, which you get after 35 points in the Shadow tree. This badass ability provides +15% shadow damage and reduces damage by 15%. The only drawback is that you cannot use Holy abilities, but this is offset by an ability called Vampiric Embrace, which is a prereq for Shadow Form.

Vampiric Embrace allows you to heal back a portion of the shadow damage you heal. Added with the +15% damage from Shadow form, and you've got a nice way to sustain your health.

Many of the other abilities in the Shadow Tree allow you to deal more damage, to regenerate mana quicker, and to stun enemies with Shadow damage. All of these wrap up in a tidy little package. Nothing is wasted.

Before I move on, there is one other ability worth mentioning. Mind Flay is one of the real gems of this set. It allos you to cause channeled damage to an enemy which also slows movement by 50%. Great for pulling, this ability also comes with a ridiculously low mana cost, which makes it an efficient part of your arsenal.

So now you've got the spells, what now?

The idea behind this build is that through a good use of spells, gear, and mob choice, you can grind on enemies without having to stop often to drink or rest. In fact, on most grind night, I only need to drink once every 30 minutes when I rebuff.

For gear, make sure you deck yourself out in +Spirit gear. The higher your +spirit gear, the quicker your regen rate, and that's what this set is all about: reducing downtime. A good secondary stat to focus on is +shadow/spell damage. The idea here is that if you deal more damage per spell, then you will need to cast fewer total spells. This also helps to reduce downtime. Stamina is a good stat to focus on, as more hitpoints allow you to grind longer. Intellect is the least important of the stats, but a few points should find their way here.

Now, where to grind? Pre-shadow form, you will want to grind on mobs about 2-3 levels lower than yourself. The best areas are onces with relatively densely packed mobs which allow you to kill, kill, kill without having to do too much searching. However, if the mobs are too close, then you will pull mobs in groups, which will only work against us. Elementals will be your friend here, because of their low hit points. Other casters and squishies work well here. I alos like grinding on humanoids for cloth drops, and have alot of luck/fun with ogres.

I'll add more later. I hope this was useful to someone!
